about

Immerse yourself in the studio sessions and demos of what was to become the album Journeys by Night. The studio was located in a farm in the middle of nowhere of Poissy near Paris. The farm was sold a few months after the recording of the album, the studio moved to a bigger better one while the farm accidentally burnt right after.

The songs sound great even if they didn't go through mastering and the vocals contain flaws and some natural interpretational uniqueness which I'm far from being ashamed of, hell yeah! :)

Journeys by Night is the debut album by Caesar Gergess & The Dusk Wanderers. It depicts a stroll around a city at night punctuated by different stops in pubs, bars, cabarets and of course, jazz clubs.

Gergess, who has a rich breathy baritone, has chosen to cover eight songs which surprisingly, are not only jazz standards but also folk and pop. He made his choices while singing under the shower or when roaming the streets of cities to which he had travelled for the past four years.

From Nick Drake’s acoustic folk River Man to the Pet Shop Boys’ pop classic Love Comes Quickly and from Nino Ferrer’s bossa nova La Rua Madureira to Gershwin’s standard The Man I Love, Caesar Gergess & The Dusk Wanderers succeed in bringing all these songs together under the roof of the desired crossover between vocal jazz and classical music. Some songs are charged with complex emotional strings and some are slowed down and reduced to their very essence with merely piano and vocals.

Along with the covers, Gergess wrote two songs: When Love Hurts and Cold Wind Town in which he depicts two kinds of aftermaths following the end of an affair; one filled with and the other drenched in despair and. Despite all that melancholy, the album is strewn with luminous intentions in the voice and the music that shine through and light the dark.

The music on Journeys by Night is the result of animated discussions between Caesar Gergess and contagiously vibrant saxophone/flute player Hubert Camus that Gergess met in a wind instrument shop back in 2006 and without whom the album might have never existed.
On stage, the formation can include up to eleven musicians or be reduced to a quartet since The Dusk Wanderers can adapt, interchange and intermingle.
